  • Graduating Seniors who recieve the Seal of Biliteracy will gain the following benefits:

    • Gold Seal of Biliteracy on High School Diploma
    • Seal of Biliteracy noted on High School Transcripts
    • Name in Graduation Bulletin
    • Lapel Pin
    • Meet the college entrance requirement of two years of foreign language for Illinois public colleges and universities
    • Obtain college credit in modern languages at Illinois public colleges and universities

Seal of Biliteracy Criteria

  • Candidates for the Seal of Biliteracy must meet two criteria, one in English and one in a world language:

    English (ONE of the following):

    • ACT Score composite of 21 or 18 on the English Subject Area Test
    • SAT Score of 480 in English Language Arts
    • ACCESS Scores of 5.0 Overall, 4.2 Reading, and 4.2 Writing
    • AAPPL Test Score of I-5 or above in all language domains of Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing

    World Language (ONE of the following):

    • 4 or 5 on the AP Language Exam
    • AAPPL Test score of I-5 or above in all language domains in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish
    • Portfolio option for languages in which tests are not available

     

    Students who do not meet the criteria for the Seal of Biliteracy may still be eligible for the Commendation Toward Biliteracy. The criteria for the Commendation toward Biliteracy are:

    English (ONE of the following):

    • ACT Score composite of 21 or 18 on the English Subject Area Test
    • SAT Score of 480 in English Language Arts
    • ACCESS Literacy Score of 3.5 or above
    • AAPPL Test Score between I-1 and I-4 in all language domains of Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing

    World Language (ONE of the following):

    • 3 on the AP Language Exam
    • AAPPL Test score between I-1 and I-4 in all language domains in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish
